E85 is a motor fuel mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline that is an alternative fuel as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. While E85 is billed as a “green” fuel, because its ethanol component typically comes from corn and is renewable, there is controversy over whether E85 is actually an environmentally friendly choice as a vehicle fuel. Scientific evidence exists that the fossil fuel used in producing the corn and the ethanol actually is greater than the gasoline saved by burning 85 percent ethanol. Also, most “Flex Fuel” vehicles that are capable of burning E85 tend to get worse gas mileage – around 20 percent less – than they achieve when burning regular unleaded gasoline.
